可能很多人對巴巴多斯這個國度比擬生疏。巴巴多斯于1966年11月30日獨(dú)立，之后作為英聯(lián)邦成員國，不斷以英國女王伊麗莎白二世為國度元首。

直到2021年11月30日，巴巴多斯取消英國女王的國度元首位置，宣布改制為共和國，迎來有史以來第一位總統(tǒng)：桑德拉·梅森（Sandra Mason）。

The Origin Of The Name Barbados

The name Barbados (Spanish and Portuguese for “bearded”) might have its origin in the bearded fig trees that proliferate on the island.

巴巴多斯這個名字(西班牙語和葡萄牙語意為“有胡須的”)可能源于島上生長的無花果樹，藤蔓蜿蜒宛如胡須，故而得名。

It’s believed that the name “Los Barbados” was given by Pedro Campos in 1536 when the Portuguese explorer the island while sailing to Brazil.

人們以為“Los Barbados”（有胡須的人）這個名字是1536年葡萄牙人佩德羅·坎波斯飛行到巴西，發(fā)現(xiàn)這個島嶼時起的。

There’s A Neptune Reference In The Flag

國旗上有海神的三叉戟

The Barbados flag consists of a stripe of gold, between two blue stripes. These colors, in this order, represent the country’s beautiful beaches, its blue skies, golden sand, and blue, pure waters.

巴巴多斯國旗由三個垂直條紋做成，左右兩邊是藍(lán)色，中間是金色。這些顏色依次代表了這個國度美麗的海灘、湛藍(lán)的天空、金色的沙灘和湛藍(lán)純潔的海水。

In the center of the flag, within the golden stripe, we can see the tridentof Poseidon/Neptun, the Graeco-Roman God that represented the sea. This trident appeared on colonial emblems when Barbados was part of the British Empire.

The trident symbolizes the island’s past?—?but also its present. In the flag, this trident is broken, representing Barbados’ independence.

The original inhabitants of Barbados were called the Arawak’s Indians.

The island was first colonized by Great Britain in 1625 and remained an English colony until 1966 which is when Barbados first gained its independence. Before the British arrived, the island was almost entirely covered in rain forest and was also full of wild pigs.

Tiger Woods got married on the island of Barbados in October 2004 to his Swedish girlfriend, Elin. The location of the wedding was at the famous Sandy Lane Hotel, and they said their vows on the beautiful beach.

The people of Barbados are called Bajans.

In informal settings, Barbadians call themselves “Bajans”, and they speak Bajan Creole. Bajan Creole is an English-based creole language with strong African influences. It’s mostly a spoken language, with English replacing it in formal, written communications.

The capital of Barbados is Bridgetown.

The original name for Bridgetown was Indian Bridge. It was called this because of the very rough bridge the Indians built over the river. The English build a new bridge just after they colonized Barbados in the same place as the original bridge. Today Bridgetown is a small city with a vibrant heart. It has some great shopping and is particularly good for people looking for bargains because there are lots of duty-free shops.

布里奇頓的原名是印第安橋。之所以這樣叫是由于印第安人在河上修建了一座十分粗制濫造的橋。英國人殖民巴巴多斯之后，在舊址上建了一座新橋。今天，布里奇頓是一個充溢生機(jī)的小城市。它有一些很棒的購物場所，還有很多免稅商店，特別合適喜歡物美價廉的人。

One time, Barbados was considered to be the healthiest place to live in the world. The country is reputed to have had roughly half the deaths of other countries between 1841 and 1845. This period is when Barbados first came on the radar from a tourist point of view.

Also known as ‘the land of the flying fish’, Barbados usually serves this steamed fish with cou cou which is made with cornmeal and okra and is similar to polenta or grits.

Cricket is huge in Barbados. This dates back to its colonial past. Barbados has been the home of the forgers of cricket as a competitive sport.

In Barbados, you can find people playing cricket at almost any time of the year, anywhere: in beaches, fields or streets. Historically, Barbados has won 27 tournaments, and it participates in three cricket seasons.

Coral Limestone

85% of the island’s composition consists of a 20–30 meters thick layer of coral limestone. And most of the island’s surface water runs off underground. Thanks to this layer of coral limestone, Barbados has one of the purest waters in the world, since the coral acts as a natural filter.
